Last night Google began offering free IMAP service for Gmail. I’ve long preferred Gmail over Apple’s (not-free) mail service that’s bundled into .mac, mainly for it’s archive instead of delete function, awesome searching, and spam filtering, but since I got my iPhone back in June, I’ve been using my .mac account primarily (and having my gmail messages forwarded to .mac). This is because until today, Gmail has only offered POP mail support, and getting that to work well on an iPhone is really wonky. After last night’s update, however, I switched back to Gmail, got it set up on my iPhone and it works PERFECTLY. Your messages show up just as they should (no more accidentally downloading 300 million old archived messages through POP) and everything works like it does through Gmail’s web application: deleting messages removes them from the Inbox and archives them, moving junk mail to the Spam folder not only gets rid of junk, but it also reports the message as spam to Gmail, you can browse your entire mail archive via the All Mail folder, and you can even star messages by moving them into the Starred folder. All that’s missing is a search feature, which is not so much a Gmail limitation as it is one of the iPhone’s Mail.app. I’m hoping apple implements search in Mail, because that would be really cool. For the time being you can still switch over to Safari on the iPhone and do it through Gmail’s web interface.
